Architecture and Design Museum Opens in West Hollywood

The Architecture + Design (A+D) Museum, formerly located in Downtown Los Angeles, has reopened on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, CA. The museum has settled in at the former Playboy building at the new Sunset Millennium Project, a modern development consisting of retail, restaurants, and in the future, hotels.

The A+D Museum is another addition to West Hollywood’s existing cultural and design assets. Long known as the center for art and design in Southern California, West Hollywood’s uniquely envisioned Avenues of Art & Design district and its landmark Pacific Design Center, and equally important and historic architecture present in buildings like the Argyle Hotel on Sunset Boulevard, the Frank Lloyd Wright home on Doheny Drive, and Rudolph M. Schindler’s home, an early interpretation of modern Californian architecture (presently home to Vienna’s MAK Center for Art and Architecture L.A.), are all located in West Hollywood. These important cultural centers and icons continue to make West Hollywood one of the most design-conscious and architecturally-appealing cities in Greater Los Angeles.

The A+D Museum has opened with a retrospective of one of Los Angeles’ architectural icons, Ray Kappe. The “Ray Kappe Retrospective” at the A+D Museum covers a remarkable 50-year career which includes national and international recognition for his innovative residential projects. Oversized photographs, models, drawings, sketches, multi-media presentations and interviews with Kappe, a recipient of the American Institute of Architects’ (AIA) Lifetime Achievement Award, are on view through February 6, 2004.

The Architecture + Design Museum is located at 8560 Sunset Boulevard, West Hollywood, CA 90069; 310.659.2445; The museum is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Sunday 12:00 to 6:00 PM.
