Züri Fäscht – the biggest fair in Switzerland
Every three years Switzerland’s biggest carnival is held in Zürich, attended by hundreds of thousands of the city’s inhabitants and visitors who journey to it by train. Around the lake and all over the city center, Züri Fäscht provides fun and entertainment for young and old alike. Numerous attractions take place on land, on water and in the air. Entertaining: various rides and funfair attractions; breathtaking: highwire acts and air show acrobatics; uplifting: numerous concerts, mobile discos; spectacular: set to music, the two fireworks displays fired off from the lake on Friday and Saturday evening.

Over 1.5 million visitors flock to the popular carnival. Both local and regional public transport services run round the clock so that visitors from near and far will have no trouble getting to there. Swiss railways also offer numerous late-night connections to the major towns in German-speaking Switzerland.

World class Zürich – the last big meeting before Athens
Athletes heading to compete for Olympic medals in the second half of August will break their journey to Athens in Zürich: The Golden League Meeting “World Class Zürich” in Letzigrund Stadium is the last big gathering of the top stars before the highpoint of the season. Twenty disciplines and an exciting supporting program with a total of some 350 athletes assure four and a half hours of top-class athletics. Every high-ranking and famous athlete is on the list of race participants at World Class Zürich – because of the rule at the Olympics and Championships that a maximum of three athletes from any one nation may enter the same discipline, for certain events at Letzigrund there is an even better line-up in terms of athletic talent than at the Olympic finals to follow.

Many superstars return to Zürich every year: among them are Maria Mutola of Mozambique, who has now won the 800m event eleven times consecutively, and Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco, who has secured victory in the 1500m eight times in a row. This year the 800m distance is once again one of the Golden League events for which a consecutive victory at all six Golden League Meetings is rewarded with a share of the one million dollar jackpot.

Zürich Theater Spectacle – that unique summer experience
In the last few years the Theater Spektacular has become an exciting major occasion with a unique atmosphere. Over 20 theater groups from all over the world give guest performances every year in the Landiwiese park. The festival takes place at various venues in Zürich. Some of the groups or artists perform open-air in a park near the lake. The Swiss dance and theater scene has always had a place on the program, too. Exclusively Swiss-made productions are put on at the club with its unique, untheatrical atmosphere: The small theater will this year be turned into a veritable center for children’s dramatics. On the bill are not only performances, but also workshops and various supporting events. The guests’ culinary delight has also been provided for: Tasty tidbits of international cuisine will be on offer over the entire festival grounds.

The Zürich Theater Spektacular is a festival for new and innovative theater, dance and related genres. The festival appoints itself the task of showing work by artists from Europe and other continents who realize their ideas in an artistically discerning form. A unique summer experience.

Street Parade 2004 – “elements of culture”
The most colorful and beautiful techno event is just around the corner: On August 7, 2004 the 13th Street Parade rolls onto the Zürich asphalt. “Elements of culture”, the motto for 2004, is supposed to incite creativity and raise awareness that countless culture creators in the house and techno scene have for years been doing a great deal of work and giving important impulses in connection with the Street Parade. House and techno, the whole gamut of electronic music and digital art, are today established cultural assets and will, like other genres in modern music, have their permanent place in the future. It’s still rocking in the underground scene. At the same time the world goes on turning. New times dawn, without neglecting the old flame of house and techno. The motto is intended to motivate others to develop and keep up culture in discourse with other individuals, other subjects and other peoples.

Besides for the Swiss trucks, among the selected lovemobiles this year are teams from Portugal, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy and Russia. Seven floats from Germany will be at the start. The Zürich Street Parade has received a great deal of international attention this year.

To ensure unhampered enjoyment of the party night, travel to the event on public transport. The trams run all through the night; the trains and buses in Zürich canton run until 4.00 a.m.

Bullinger Anniversary 2004 – diverse activities in celebration of the great successor to Huldrych Zwingli
Five hundred years ago Huldrych Zwingli and his little known successor Heinrich Bullinger changed the city of Zürich more fundamentally than anyone else since. The Reformer Heinrich Bullinger (1504 – 1575) stood constantly in the shadow of Huldrych Zwingli, whose work, however, would have come to nothing without his successor. On the occasion of the 500th anniversary in 2004 of Bullinger’s birth, this important figure will be lavishly honored.

The events of that time can be relived on a Zurich Tourism city tour. Tourists are shown the very spots where history was made how Zürich’s past lives on in the present.

River Cruise & Cocktails – the only city tour in Europe to sail on a river and a lake
The extraordinary city tour on board the Limmat ship takes you on the river to the most beautiful sights of Zürich and beyond to the lake. Visitors have a wonderful view on the trip of the historic city and its buildings. Once on the lake, a fantastic view of the imposing Alpine panorama opens out in clear weather.

The tour guide is knowledgeable and has a great deal to tell. She points out the sights in German and English and imparts cultural information on the city, lake, surroundings and their history. After the tour on the river and the lake the Limmat ship, which is also commissioned as a regular cruise ship, sails to the Hotel zum Storchen, the only hotel in Zürich which is situated right on the water’s edge. The crowning conclusion to the tour is a refreshing cocktail served under its arcades.

This city tour is exactly the right thing for people who wish to discover Zürich in summer in a very special way.
