Uruguay tourism: Back in action

After years of suspending service, a European airline has put Uruguay back in its service route.  Iberia resumed its thrice-weekly direct flights from Barcelona and Madrid to Carrasco Airport on July 6, ending a long drought between Uruguay and European airlines. The new flight is quite important for Uruguayan tourism, given the increasing number of overseas visitors coming to this region.

Topping the list of Uruguay tourists are from visitors from Argentina.  Damian Argul, a Uruguay travel professional has concerns.  “Even though crossing the Rio de la Plata is very easy and cheap, it is hard to find information in how to travel between Argentina and Uruguay,” said Damián Argul.  “What are Europeans looking for in Uruguay?”

Many are hopeful that the new Iberia flight is a step towards the consolidation and recovery of Uruguay tourism.

Air France, Aliltlia, BOAC and others from the UK, Lufthansa, KLM, Sabena, SAS and Aeroflot used to fly to Uruguay’s Carrasco Airport.  (with wire inputs)
