Mayatlon is Back for a Good Cause – A Triathlon for Education in Mayan Communities in Mexico
Next March 1 at 11:00, will take place in Pac Chen, municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas, the third edition of Mayatlón a sprint triathlon measures are: 750 meter swim in the lagoon Mojarras, 20 kilometers mountain bike paths and trails and 5 km run along jungle trails.
The event is supported by the Mexican Triathlon Federation and is limited to 400 competitors quota. Athletes may participate in a single category or in relays for those with less experience or do not practice the three disciplines; Ragistration fees from $ 750 pesos in single to $ 1,500 per team.
Revenue received by this Mayatlón will go to the construction of an adjoining the existing multi-grade classroom in the community of Pac Chen classes. Currently 46 children from fourth grade to sixth grade go to the only room where two teachers teach in Spanish and Mayan language. According to parents, expanding the school with extra classroom will optimize and facilitate children’s learning.
Mayatlón is an initiative of the operator Alltournative expeditions to improve the education of children and youth where Mayan communities, where the schools and the adverse conditions tend to abandon their basic studies. The project began in 2013 with the goal of building a house for the school teacher of Pac Chen thus solving the problem of turnover and absenteeism of teachers. This house became an example of sustainable architecture for locals.
In the second edition was launched a school bus to benefit children 6 to 21 settlements, who roamed up to 20 km cycling, walking or hitchhiking to attend primary and secondary school located in the community of Tres Reyes. With this vehicle schoolchildren are transported safely reduced dropout and seventh grade enrollment doubled since several children who had left school for not having how to move, resumed their education.
