Board a floatplane and head to the wilds of Alaska. Hike through forests and up mountainsides, canoe and kayak across lakes, embark on a thrilling white-water rafting excursion and enjoy world-class sport fishing for salmon with Within the Wild Adventure Company. Experience the natural beauty of Alaska at one of three family owned remote lodges located within southcentral Alaska. Riversong Lodge, Redoubt Bay Lodge and Winterlake Lodge, operated by Kirsten and Carl Dixon, offer fly-in, adventure-oriented travel coupled with sophisticated regional backcountry cooking in the heart of the wilderness.
Each one of Within the Wild’s backcoountry lodges is located in geographic areas of Alaska that have a colorful history and a storied past. Riversong Lodge lies at the confluence of the Yentna River and Lake Creek and offers world-class sport fishing. Anglers here may fish for all five species of salmon and the lodge’s fly-fishing school offers opportunities to learn the art of fly-casting. The lodge, hand-built from local logs provides rustic riverside comfort with ten cabins surrounding the main lodge facing the Yentna River towards Mt. McKinley. The lodge also serves as the float trip headquarters and the base for multi-day excursions into the surrounding wilderness. Day trips to any Within the Wild Adventure Company lodge properties are available as well as daily fly-out fishing excursions to favorite neighboring rivers. Riversong Lodge is noted for Kirsten Dixon’s award winning cuisine and for the professionalism and hospitality of its staff.
Redoubt Bay Lodge lies at the entrance to Lake Clark Pass and offers the only accommodations within a 171,000-acre critical habitat area. The remote and rustic retreat sits on a knoll overlooking Big River Lakes and offers 3 small lakeside cabins and a cozy historic main lodge built of hand-hewn log. The area is home to one of the state’s densest populations of resident brown bears and guests here will have the opportunity to view them with their cubs as they come down to the lake to fish. The lodge serves as a base to adventures into the surrounding wilderness including opportunities to enjoy sport fishing, kayaking, hiking, and experiencing the natural beauty of the Redoubt Bay Critical Habitat area. Excursions into Lake Clark National Park, flight seeing through the Pass and to Redoubt Volcano is offered as well.
Winterlake Lodge, nestled along the Iditarod Trail along the western edge of the Alaska Range is the only property that is open year round. Set amid vistas of glaciers and rugged mountain ranges the lodge offers seclusion and spectacular scenery and is accessible only by small plane, dog team, or snowmobile. Visitors here are invariably gratified to sample chef, Kirsten’s stylish fare along with log-cabin hospitality. Kirsten is an internationally recognized chef and the author of two cookbooks and the remote outpost serves as the setting for the Culinary Series, a series of special cooking classes offered once a month throughout the year. Here world-class chefs teach students the art of sophisticated backcountry cooking with an emphasis on culinary excellence and regional ingredients. The lodge offers opportunities for hiking and wildlife viewing and visitors here will have the chance to see many species of Alaska birds, wildflowers and berries that are difficult to view in other locales.
